Image Saint Joan of Arc, before her judges, summed up the Faith of the Doctors of the Church in these few words: "About Jesus Christ and the Church, I simply know they're just one thing, and we shouldn't complicate the matter" (CCC # 795).

We receive the Body and the Blood of Jesus Christ in a sacramental way in the Eucharist, so that we can form Christ’s social body in the unity of all members. Saint Paul asks: “The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ?” (The First Letter to the Corinthians 10, 16).

Jesus Christ is Where the Church Is. (Lesson 13) PDF Print E-mail

Image Saint Paul’s understanding of the Church is fundamentally important: he always referred to the Church as the Body of Christ in which Christ is the Head that rules over, commands, nourishes and maintains the whole Body. These two realities are inseparable. In his Hymn to Jesus Christ in The First Letter to the Colossians, after showing Christ’s Preeminence, Saint Paul affirms:

“He is the head of the body, the Church” (The First Letter to the Colossians 1, 18).
“For in him all the fullness was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile all things from him” (The First Letter to the Colossians 1, 19).
